Best Shower Head Extension Arms

A shower head extension arm is a metal fitting that adds length between the shower arm on the wall and the shower head, so the head sits higher, lower or farther from the wall. This guide covers six extension arms from Amazon listings. Each product section gives the length, material, finish, connection, mount and load limit that the listing states. Choose by the length you need, then check the load limit on the listing. The sources give no standard for shower arm extensions, so you have to check the thread on your own shower arm before you buy.

Quick answer

  • Choose by the length you need, then check the load limit. Four listings state one: 4.4 lb on two Singing Rain arms, a 5 lb recommended maximum on the BRIGHT SHOWERS arm, and 10 lb on the HammerHead arm.
  • Check the thread on your existing shower arm first. Four listings say G1/2, one says 1/2 in NPT, and the HammerHead listing does not state a thread size.
  • None of the six listings states a flow rate. Read the gpm marking on the head you plan to use, because the EPA technical reference says to verify it.
  • No opened source gives a standard shower head height or a standard for extension arms, so pick the length from the height you want in your own shower.

How we chose

Nine listings were considered across two Amazon searches for shower head extension arms, and six were kept. Each kept listing is an arm that a shower head threads onto, and each states the arm length and the connection. Three were left out: a wall flange arm meant for a fixed head, which does not extend the arm, and two that the site had already set aside. Listings were read on 2026-10-22. The order below is the order the listings were read, not a ranking. Brand names identify products only, and no brand named here endorses or is affiliated with this site.

What the sources say, and what they do not

The sources opened for this post cover showerheads, flow, installation and pressure. None of them covers shower arm extensions. The EPA’s WaterSense page says a standard showerhead uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute (gpm), and that a WaterSense labeled showerhead must demonstrate that it uses no more than 2.0 gpm. The EPA’s technical reference for showerheads says to verify the gpm marking on the showerhead. The sources do not say whether an arm changes the flow from the head.

The Department of Energy page says the federal definition of a showerhead includes handheld showerheads. The sources do not address arms that carry handheld heads.

On pressure, the only range in the sources is a general residential figure of 40 to 60 psi, from an Oklahoma State University Extension fact sheet about irrigation systems. That sheet also says high water pressure causes a different set of problems. The sources do not say that a shower head or an arm changes the pressure the house supplies. Flow depends on the house supply, and a head or arm cannot supply pressure the plumbing does not provide.

For installation, the Department of Energy installer guide says to clean the threads of the shower arm well, wrap new thread tape, and use thread tape at all connections. It also says to make sure connections will not leak. The New Jersey Department of Health guidance on removing a shower head says to try removing it by hand first, and to turn the water on and check for leaks afterward. If a connection still leaks, it says to re-wrap the threads with thread sealant tape and tighten carefully with an adjustable wrench.

Water use is a separate question from height. If that is your main concern, see water-efficient handheld heads. EPA’s showerhead page says an average family could save 2,700 gallons per year by installing WaterSense labeled showerheads.

The products

Each heading names one listing. Facts in each section come from that listing unless a source is named.

OFFO 17 Inch Extension Arm, Chrome

Type: height-adjustable extension arm with three gear-lock joints and set knobs. The listing says the arm is 17 inches long, with a chrome finish over a stainless steel body, and uses G1/2 threads. It threads onto the existing shower arm, and a hex key is included for a do-it-yourself install without a plumber. Included parts are the hex key, gaskets and an instruction manual. The listing says the joints hold heavy rainfall heads without drooping, and gives an item weight of 15.8 ounces. Flow, spray settings, hose length, filter and certification are not stated. At 17 inches it is the longest arm in this group, and the listing does not say how far the joints let the head move.

Skip if you need a load limit in writing, because this listing gives no number.

Limitation: the listing describes heavy rainfall heads but gives no load figure to check that claim against.

Singing Rain 16 Inch Dual Bendable Arm

Type: extension arm with two bendable sections. The listing says the arm is 16 inches long, has a chrome finish, and is made of 304 stainless steel, shown as SUS304. It uses a G1/2 universal connector and mounts through a threaded connection with a locking set screw, with no plumber needed according to the listing. The listing says the arm accommodates shower heads up to 16 inches in size and has two locking joints, one for height and one for angle. Included parts are not stated, and no load limit is given. Flow, spray settings and hose length are not stated either, since this is an arm and not a head.

Skip if you need to know what comes in the box before ordering, because the listing does not state the included parts.

Limitation: without a weight figure, this arm cannot be checked against a heavy rain head by the numbers on the listing.

Singing Rain 5 Inch Adjustable Arm

Type: short adjustable extension arm, 5 inches end to end. The listing says the arm is 304 stainless steel with a chrome finish and a G1/2 universal connector. Setup is tool-free, using hand-tightenable nuts and a locking set screw. The listing does not state the angle range. It says the locking gear and set screws hold up to 4.4 lb. Included parts are Teflon tape, a video and a user manual. The listing says 11 inch and 15 inch versions are also offered. The 11 inch version is one of the six listings here; the 15 inch version is not. The 4.4 lb figure matches the 11 inch Singing Rain arm.

Skip if you need more than 5 inches of extra length, because a longer arm is a different listing.

Limitation: 4.4 lb is the only load figure for this arm, so a head heavier than that is outside the stated limit.

Singing Rain 11 Inch Adjustable Arm

Type: adjustable extension arm, 11 inches (32 cm). The listing’s technical details say SUS304 stainless steel, but its About text heading says solid brass, and the listing does not say which is correct. The finish is chrome, and the connection is a G1/2 universal thread. It mounts with a threaded nut and a set screw, and the listing includes a hex key and an extra washer. The technical details give a maximum weight load of 4.4 lb and say a set screw on the nut keeps the arm fixed. The listing recommends Teflon tape but does not include it. Its 11 inch length sits between the 5 inch and 16 inch arms in this group.

Skip if the metal type matters to you, since this listing gives two answers. If your head weighs more than 4.4 lb, this arm is outside its stated figure.

Limitation: a buyer who needs one confirmed material cannot settle it from this listing, and no opened source covers that question.

HammerHead 12 Inch Metal Arm

Type: adjustable metal extension arm with a 12 inch reach. The listing says a 16 inch version is also offered. The material is solid brass, the finish is polished chrome, and the connector rotates independently and locks with screws. Its 12 inch reach sits between the 11 inch and 16 inch arms in this group. The listing does not state the thread size, and the tool needed for mounting is not stated. Thread seal tape is included, and the listing says that is everything needed. It says the arm holds up to 10 lb and is compatible with rain, handheld, dual and filtered heads. The listing also mentions lifetime backing, with no terms stated.

Skip if you need a thread size before you order, because this listing does not give one.

Limitation: the 10 lb figure is the only load number, and the listing does not say whether it applies to rain heads specifically.

BRIGHT SHOWERS 5 Inch Brass Arm

Type: 5 inch universal extension arm, listed for rain and handheld heads. The listing says the arm is brass with a chrome finish and uses 1/2 in NPT universal threads. Mounting is tool-free and twist-on, according to the listing, and Teflon tape is included. The listing gives a recommended maximum shower head weight of 5 lb and says the arm has two heavy-duty knobs with reinforced gear joints. Flow and spray settings are not stated, because the product is an arm and not a head. Its 5 inch length matches the Singing Rain 5 inch arm, but the two differ in material and in the thread the listing states.

Skip if your head weighs more than the 5 lb maximum, or if you need more than 5 inches of extra length.

Limitation: this is the only listing in the group that states an NPT thread, and no opened source says whether that matches the arm already on your wall.

The table repeats only what each listing states. “Not stated” means the listing does not say.

Listing (ASIN) Brand Arm length Material and finish Connection Load limit
B0GT8JQGYX OFFO 17 in Stainless steel body, chrome G1/2 threads Not stated
B0CFTP5H4D Singing Rain 16 in, two bendable sections 304 stainless steel, chrome G1/2 universal connector Not stated
B0DL5BV6V5 Singing Rain 5 in end to end 304 stainless steel, chrome G1/2 universal connector 4.4 lb (listing)
B098JSH744 Singing Rain 11 in (32 cm) SUS304 (tech details) and solid brass (About heading); chrome G1/2 universal thread 4.4 lb (listing)
B0C4Z7VWR2 HammerHead 12 in reach Solid brass, polished chrome Thread size not stated 10 lb (listing)
B09H2TB4SB BRIGHT SHOWERS 5 in Brass, chrome 1/2 in NPT universal threads (listing) 5 lb recommended maximum head weight (listing)

Three calculations use only the listing figures. Arm lengths run from 5 inches to 17 inches, so the longest is 3.4 times the shortest (17 divided by 5). The 4.4 lb figure is 44 percent of the 10 lb figure (4.4 divided by 10). Two of the six listings state no load at all, which is one third of the set (2 divided by 6). No listing gives the weight of a head, so none of these load figures can be compared with a head without weighing it.

If a longer arm is not the right fix, look at other routes: shower bar options for an existing head, drill-free slide bars, sliding shower heads, shower wand bars, or extension hoses for handheld heads.

What we could not verify: what the sources do not say

  • Standards for extension arms: none of the opened sources gives a load rating, length or mounting standard for an arm.
  • Shower arm thread size: no opened source states the thread size of a standard shower arm. The listings give G1/2, 1/2 in NPT or no size, and the sources do not say which fits a standard arm. Check the thread on your arm or in its manual.
  • Shower head height: no opened source gives a standard height above the floor, so this post recommends no height.
  • Flow and pressure: no source says an extension arm changes flow or pressure, and none says a shower head changes the supply pressure. The 40 to 60 psi figure is a general residential range from an irrigation sheet, not a shower standard.
  • Rain heads: the EPA page mentions water-efficient rain showers, but the sources give no flow criteria for rain showers, so the sources do not cover rain head compatibility for these listings.
  • WaterSense version: the WaterSense showerhead specification read for this post is labeled Version 1.0. EPA’s showerhead page says Version 1.1 made minor changes, and Version 1.1 was not read.
  • Conflicting material: the 11 inch Singing Rain listing gives both SUS304 stainless steel and solid brass. No source settles it.
  • Finish care: no source gives cleaning or soak limits for chrome, brass or stainless arms.
  • Load limits: four listings state a figure and two state none. No source says what load an arm should carry.

Frequently asked questions

How much height does a shower head extension arm add?

The listings state arm lengths from 5 inches to 17 inches. The sources do not give a standard shower head height, so no length is the right one by default. Measure where the head sits now and where you want it, then pick the arm that closes the gap. For height that adjusts without changing arms, see handheld heads on a slide bar.

Will an extension arm change my water pressure?

The sources do not say an extension arm changes pressure or flow. Flow depends on the house supply, and the gpm marking on the head is the figure to check. The only pressure range in the sources is a general residential figure of 40 to 60 psi from an irrigation sheet. For what high-pressure heads can and cannot do, see high-pressure heads and water-saving options.

Do I need thread tape?

The Department of Energy installer guide says to use thread tape at all connections, and the New Jersey guidance says to wrap thread seal tape around the shower arm threads. Three of the six listings include tape, and the 11 inch Singing Rain listing recommends Teflon tape. Follow the instructions that come with the arm, and turn the water on to check for leaks.

What weight limit should I check?

Four listings state a figure. Two Singing Rain arms list 4.4 lb, the BRIGHT SHOWERS arm recommends a 5 lb maximum head weight, and the HammerHead arm holds up to 10 lb. The OFFO arm and the 16 inch Singing Rain arm give no figure. No source gives a standard to compare these numbers with, so check the weight of the head you plan to use against the figure on the arm’s listing.

Which thread should I look for?

Four listings say G1/2, one says 1/2 in NPT, and one does not state a thread size. No opened source gives the thread size of a standard shower arm, so the listings cannot be matched to your shower from the sources. Check the thread on your existing arm before you order.

Can an extension arm hold a rain shower head?

Three listings name rain heads. The OFFO listing says its joints hold heavy rainfall heads without drooping, the BRIGHT SHOWERS title names rain heads, and the HammerHead listing says it is compatible with rain heads. The sources give no flow or weight criteria for rain heads, so compare the head’s weight with the arm’s stated limit before you buy.

Bottom line

Buy only when the arm’s stated length, thread and load limit all match your shower and your head. Where a listing gives no thread or load figure, treat that point as unknown and check it before you order.
