Dorm showers are shared, so your shower kit has to travel from your room to the bathroom and back, wet. This guide lists what to pack and what to skip, using CDC advice on shared showers and the Amazon listings of five caddy totes sold for dorm use. It is a checklist, not a shopping spree: most items are things you already own.

The one piece of gear worth choosing carefully is the carrier. The listings differ on material, pockets, handles, and whether the bag hangs, and several leave out dimensions, which we flag below.

Quick answer: the short dorm shower kit

  • Shower shoes or sandals. The CDC advises wearing shoes or sandals in locker rooms and public showers.
  • Your own towel. The CDC says not to share towels or other personal items.
  • A carrier that drains. A mesh tote, or a solid tote with drain holes, so the kit can dry between showers.
  • Soap, shampoo, and a razor in sizes you can carry in one hand.
  • Hand soap or sanitizer. The CDC says to scrub for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • A hook or hanger if your bathroom has no shelf. Several totes below hang from a hook.

What the CDC says about shared showers

The CDC Ringworm Prevention page advises wearing shoes or sandals in areas like locker rooms and public showers, keeping your skin clean and dry, and not sharing clothing, towels, sheets, or other personal items. The CDC Foot Hygiene page says to wash your feet every day and dry them completely. The CDC handwashing page says to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds, and to use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.

None of the CDC pages we read mention dorms. A dorm hall bathroom is similar to the locker rooms and public showers the CDC does name, but that comparison is our reading, not a CDC statement. We are not giving medical advice, and a doctor is the right person for any skin concern.

Choosing the carrier: five dorm totes from their listings

We read each of these Amazon listings on 2026-10-17 and kept five that describe a portable shower bag or tote for dorm or college use. We left out men’s toiletry kits and a multi-use plastic basket. The table uses only what the listings state.

Tote Material (listing) Size or capacity (listing) Pockets and handles Hangs or folds
YASONIC mesh bag High-density tear-resistant mesh Not stated 8 side pockets, large main compartment, single widened handle Hangs on hooks or racks
Comfy Flow Tote 100% waterproof EVA rubber 13.4 x 4.9 x 7.9 in; 8.5 L; 0.79 lb Open top, sturdy handles, keyring holder Not stated
Fammart mesh bag Odorless polyester mesh Not stated 8 pockets (title), 2 reinforced handles Not stated
EUDELE mesh caddy Breathable, tear-resistant mesh Not stated 9 pockets: 8 outer, 1 center Not stated
TERRA HOME mesh bag Durable mesh 9.75 H x 8.35 L x 5.75 W in; up to 4 full-size bottles Not stated Foldable; “hanging” in the title

YASONIC mesh shower bag

The listing describes 8 side pockets with deep and shallow divisions, a large main compartment, a reinforced bottom, and a design that hangs on hooks or racks. It also says the mesh is 30 percent more durable than standard mesh, which is the seller’s claim, not verified here. The title lists single handles, so this is the weakest pick if you want two-handed carry. View the YASONIC bag on Amazon (affiliate link)

Comfy Flow Tote

The only solid option here. The listing states 100% waterproof EVA rubber, 8.5 liters, 13.4 x 4.9 x 7.9 inches with a 6.3 inch handle drop, and 0.79 pound (0.99 pound with the removable bottom pad). The pad blocks the drain holes to hold water in, and water drains through when you take it out. The listing says it was designed in Korea. View the Comfy Flow Tote on Amazon (affiliate link)

Fammart mesh shower bag

The listing describes odorless polyester mesh that it says is not PVC, 2 reinforced handles, 8 pockets, and a 100% mesh bottom that drains after each shower. Dimensions are not in the text we read. View the Fammart bag on Amazon (affiliate link)

EUDELE mesh shower caddy

The listing describes 9 pockets, with 8 outer pockets and 1 large center pocket, in breathable tear-resistant mesh that drains quickly. Size and handle count are not in the text we read, and its uses include gyms, beaches, and camping as well as dorms. View the EUDELE caddy on Amazon (affiliate link)

TERRA HOME foldable mesh tote

The listing gives 9.75 x 8.35 x 5.75 inches, says it holds up to 4 full-size bottles, and says it folds to fit in a bag or suitcase. The title calls it a hanging travel shower bag, but the bullets we read do not describe a hook. View the TERRA HOME bag on Amazon (affiliate link)

Where the listings disagree or stay silent

  • Handles: Fammart lists 2 reinforced handles and YASONIC lists single handles. The EUDELE text we read does not give a count.
  • Dimensions: only Comfy Flow and TERRA HOME state a size in the text we read. Do not assume the others match.
  • Hanging: YASONIC says it hangs on hooks or racks, and TERRA HOME has “hanging” in its title only.
  • Waterproof or drains: the Comfy Flow pad holds water in, and the mesh bags drain. Pick one behavior on purpose.

Worked example: what one person carries

This is a planning example with assumed numbers, not a measurement. Suppose you carry a 12 fl oz shampoo, a 12 fl oz conditioner, and an 18 fl oz body wash, plus a razor, a loofah, and a toothbrush.

  • The three bottles total 42 fl oz, which is about 0.33 gallon. At roughly 8.34 pounds per gallon (the weight of water) that is about 2.7 pounds.
  • Add 0.5 pound for the razor, loofah, and toothbrush (an assumed value).
  • Add the Comfy Flow Tote’s listed 0.79 pound: 2.7 + 0.5 + 0.79 = about 4.0 pounds to carry, before a towel.
  • Volume: 8.5 liters is about 287 fl oz, and the bottles use 42 fl oz, roughly 15 percent of the stated volume.
  • Bottle count: if each bottle is 2.5 inches across (an assumption), the TERRA HOME footprint of 8.35 x 5.75 inches fits about 3 x 2 = 6 upright, yet the listing says up to 4. Trust the lower, stated number.

The takeaway is that a dorm shower kit is light, so a lighter tote helps more than a bigger one. Nothing here needs a large bag unless you carry full-size bottles for several people.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Going barefoot because the floor looks clean. The CDC page says to wear shoes or sandals in locker rooms and public showers.
  • Borrowing a roommate’s towel or razor. The CDC lists towels and personal items as things not to share.
  • Closing a wet tote. Hang it or leave it open so it can dry, as the mesh listings describe.
  • Buying the bag before you see the bathroom. If there is no hook, a hanging bag adds nothing, and a tote that stands on its own may work better.
  • Packing full-size bottles for the whole semester. The TERRA HOME listing says up to 4 bottles, so carry what you need this week.

Who can skip the tote

Skip the tote if your room has a private bathroom, since a shelf or caddy can stay in the shower. For that case, read Best Bathroom Caddy With Handle or Shower Basket. For more portable bags, see Best Mesh Caddy and Best Toiletry Caddy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need shower shoes in a dorm?

The CDC recommends shoes or sandals in locker rooms and public showers. Its pages that we read do not name dorms, but a shared dorm shower is similar, so many people apply the same advice. That is our reading, not a CDC statement.

Should my shower tote be mesh or solid?

Mesh drains and dries as the listings describe. The Comfy Flow Tote is solid EVA, and its removable pad blocks the drain holes to hold water in. Pick the behavior you want.

Which tote hangs from a hook?

The YASONIC listing says it hangs on hooks or racks. The TERRA HOME title calls it a hanging travel shower bag, but the bullets we read do not describe a hook.

How many bottles does the TERRA HOME tote hold?

The listing says up to 4 full-size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, or body wash. The size is 9.75 x 8.35 x 5.75 inches.

Can I share a towel with my roommate?

The CDC says not to share clothing, towels, sheets, or other personal items. Keep your own towel.

Is hand sanitizer enough?

The CDC says to wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and to use a sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol only if soap and water are not available.

Bottom line

Pack shower shoes, your own towel, a razor, and soap, and carry them in a tote that drains. For pockets and a hook, the YASONIC bag matches the listing. For a wipe-clean tote, choose the Comfy Flow Tote, and for a compact fold, TERRA HOME states a 4-bottle limit. Check handle count and size on the product page, since several listings omit them.
